image analysis

During 15 years of teaching my preoccuppation has been what is to be read directly from the image surface. I have been specially focused on the use of colours, and at the academic community of Bergen National College of Art I was introduced to the NCS - Natural Colour System, an analysis system I found particularly applicable also for image analysis.

interpretation of tradition

Interpretation of tradition was the main subject of my post graduate thesis. The study was based on The Craft Council of Norway, examining how their different ways of interpreting tradition since 1891 and onwards are visualised through their product design. This has further affected how many of us understand the Norwegian identity.

Referring to tradition has served various groupes from time to time, but the aspects of tradition have changed due to the different purposes.

The same selective attitude has been fundamental also for our visions of both the use of folk costume and folk art.

collection strategy

A certain target makes a selective view, also when the museums are making their main stories through their collections of buildings and items. How is the selection being worked out, and - not less important: What have never reached the collections? And how to understand the changes in collection strategy?

As the head of the collection department at The West Norway Museum of Decorative Art I have also taken major interest in how to manage collecting objects characterized as more or less ephemerals.

The issue is further examined in the research project Mishmash and trash started in 2009.
